Whakatōhea Mussels Ōpōtiki Ltd engaged Form who in turn connected with Fluid and Aquaholics Ltd in an ECI arrangement to collaborate with the early stages of design for a state-of-the-art mussel processing factory in Ōpōtiki. Mussels are currently being farmed in the open waters and transported inland for processing. The new processing factory will help the Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board achieve their long-term vision of “Ko te kai hoki i Waiaua” – “To be the food bowl that feeds the world”
The works consist of two large processing factory buildings with a drive-through canopy between them. There are several sections or functions across the factories, including areas for chillers, packing, tray-loading, storage, waste, staff amenities and loading.
A separate office, designed with resemblance to a marae, is located adjacent to the factory and will house staff and visitors. The open-plan office contains a lunchroom, meeting rooms and a commercial kitchen.
This project is part of the regional growth plan and will bring much needed jobs and opportunities to the people of the Opotiki District.
